Polaris Short List 2013

I am way late posting this because life sucks ass. And I forgot. But the Polaris 2013 Short List is as follows:

Artist: Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Album: ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!

Artist: Zaki Ibrahim
Album: Every Opposite

Artist: Metric
Album: Synthetica

Artist: METZ
Album: METZ

Artist: Purity Ring
Album: Shrines

Artist: Colin Stetson
Album: New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light

Artist: Tegan and Sara
Album: Heartthrob

Artist: A Tribe Called Red
Album: Nation II Nation

Artist: Whitehorse
Album: The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss

Artist: Young Galaxy
Album: Ultramarine
-list comes from The Polaris Prize website
Now, the list is pretty solid, but the clear front-runners are Tegan and Sara’s 80s mash note Heartthrob. I can see people arguing for Metric’s Synthetica, which I believe is their weakest album yet.  But my personal pick as a winner is the incredible return of Montreal’s Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who came back after about a decade long break with the incredible ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!, an album that made my top twenty albums of 2012. It was a welcome return from the wayward post-rock stalwarts.
The dark horse in all this is Purity Ring, the Edmontonian dream electronica duo (holla! Edmontonian by birth here!).  Their début album is really lovely.
